Author Don DeLillo once said: "America was and is an immigrant's dream." And this crossed my mind when interviewing journalist, foreign policy analyst and author Fareed Zakaria, an extraordinary Indian immigrant, who has made his American dream come true and inspired us all. He is the son of well-known Indian politician Rafiq Zakaria and journalist Fatima Zakaria. He started his journey as he says in a "salaried middle class family with enormous possibilities and wonderful sense of opportunity." His passion for international affairs led him from India to the United States where he says "people are judged by their talents and not by their origins."

The founders of Romulus Capital truly believe that the world's next great companies are emerging out of the efforts of students at top universities — and they should know as their venture capital firm was started when most of them were still in college. Krishna Gupta, Anantshree Chaturvedi and Cankut Durgun co-founded Romulus Capital in 2008, while Gupta and Durgun were at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The firm launched as a seed-stage venture capital firm raising a $1 million fund to invest in startups, particularly those launched out of MIT and Harvard University. Now, more than a dozen companies later, Romulus is raising a second much larger fund of $50 million to continue the firm's work, which has clearly struck a rich vein in the startup world.

An experienced lawyer, Asker Saeed did not set out on his professional career intent on one day working as a "Director of Diversity," but his path has led him to that role and now he believes his task is of utmost importance. In September, Saeed was appointed director of diversity at the Hartford-based law firm Day Pitney LLP. A member of the firm's senior management team, Saeed guides the further development and implementation of Day Pitney's strategic diversity plan and serves as a key leader, ambassador and advocate on diversity, inclusion and equity, keeping diversity in the forefront of all of the firm's initiatives.
"I have always just been kind of involved in the diversity issues every since I have been involved in law," said Saeed, who joined Day Pitney from IAE International Aero Engines AG, a Pratt & Whitney joint venture, where he served most recently as vice president of commercial customer business. |
