New Delhi– The immediate closure of Pakistan’s airspace to Indian carriers is expected to significantly disrupt international flight routes, increasing fuel costs and potentially leading to higher airfares, industry experts said Thursday.

The airspace shutdown will affect flights from India to Central Asia, West Asia, Europe, the UK, and North America. Experts warn that rerouted flights will face longer travel times and higher operational costs.

When Pakistan closed its airspace in 2019 following the Balakot airstrikes, Indian airlines reportedly incurred losses of nearly Rs 700 crore due to increased fuel consumption.

According to industry sources, airlines are currently assessing the impact of the latest closure. Pakistan’s airspace is a key corridor for Indian carriers, especially those operating out of northern airports like Delhi, Lucknow, and Amritsar. Flights from these cities will now likely detour through Gujarat or Maharashtra before proceeding to Europe, North America, or West Asia.

This rerouting is expected to add approximately 2 to 2.5 hours to flight durations for some US and European routes. While airlines have not yet disclosed the financial implications, they confirmed that flights will need to take longer paths over the Arabian Sea.

Air India and IndiGo have already announced adjustments to their international routes in response to the closure, which follows heightened diplomatic tensions after the recent Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir.

Air India stated, “Due to Pakistan’s airspace restrictions for Indian airlines, some Air India flights to or from North America, the UK, Europe, and the Middle East will take alternative, extended routes. We regret the inconvenience caused by this unforeseen situation, which is beyond our control. The safety of our passengers and crew remains our top priority.”

IndiGo also confirmed disruptions, saying, “A few of our international flights are being impacted due to Pakistan’s sudden airspace closure. We understand the inconvenience and are doing our best to assist passengers. Please check your flight status, and if affected, explore rebooking options or request a refund via our website.”

The situation remains fluid as airlines navigate the extended flight times and rising costs associated with the closure. (Source: IANS)
