Seoul– Samsung Electronics is preparing to unveil its first tri-folding smartphone later this year, introducing a bold new form factor to its flagship Galaxy lineup.

“We are working hard to release it by the end of this year,” said Roh Tae-moon, President and Head of the Device eXperience (DX) division at Samsung Electronics, during a press conference following the Galaxy Unpacked 2025 event in New York, where the company launched its latest Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7 models.

Samsung has recently teased the development of a tri-fold device featuring three screens. At Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025 in March, the company showcased two concept designs, the Flex G and Flex S, signaling its active development in the tri-fold space.

The upcoming tri-fold model aims to help Samsung maintain its dominance in the competitive foldable smartphone market, where it faces increasing pressure from rivals like Huawei. Huawei has already introduced a tri-fold model, the Mate X3 Ultimate.

Samsung, which pioneered the foldable phone category with its first model in 2019, is now contending with intensified competition from global players, including Google, Motorola, and several Chinese manufacturers.

According to industry data, Samsung led the global foldable market in 2024 with a 32.9 percent share, followed by Huawei at 23.1 percent and Motorola at 17 percent.

As part of its strategy to retain market leadership, Samsung has enhanced the performance and design of its newest Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7 smartphones. Both models now offer features and AI capabilities nearly equivalent to those found in the company’s premium Galaxy S series devices.

Unveiled at the Galaxy Unpacked 2025 event held at the Duggal Greenhouse in New York City, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 represent Samsung’s slimmest and lightest foldables to date, boasting upgraded cameras and advanced AI integration. The company also introduced the Galaxy Watch 8 at the event.

The Galaxy Z Fold 7 measures just 8.9 mm thick when folded and 4.2 mm when unfolded, compared to 12.1 mm and 5.6 mm, respectively, for the previous Fold 6. At 215 grams, it is lighter than the Galaxy S25 Ultra, Samsung’s top-tier bar-type smartphone launched earlier this year.

Despite the reduced size and weight, the Fold 7 features a 6.5-inch external screen and an 8.0-inch main display — 11 percent larger than the Fold 6’s inner screen. It is equipped with a 200-megapixel wide-angle camera and powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Mobile Platform for Galaxy, along with Samsung’s signature image processing and editing tools.
