MUMBAI– Indian stock markets rallied Tuesday, with the benchmark Sensex gaining more than 1,200 points and the Nifty closing above 23,800, as stronger corporate earnings and shifting global investment sentiment fueled a fourth consecutive session of gains.
The BSE Sensex surged 1,225.07 points, or 1.62%, to close at 76,917.85, while the NSE Nifty 50 advanced 370.05 points, or 1.58%, to finish at 23,810.85.
The rally was supported by optimism surrounding quarterly earnings from Indian companies, along with investor interest in sectors outside the global technology and artificial intelligence industries, which have recently faced selling pressure.
Market analysts said the sustained recovery in benchmark indices reflected improving investor confidence, although technical resistance could limit further near-term gains.
The Nifty is expected to encounter resistance between 23,800 and 23,900, while the 23,200 to 23,500 range could provide support if markets retreat.
“On the downside, the 23,200–23,500 range is likely to act as immediate support in the event of a pullback. We reiterate our preference for stocks demonstrating relative strength, while maintaining prudent overnight risk management amid global event-related uncertainties,” analysts stated.
Among the leading gainers, BSE, Nestle India and Tata Consumer Products helped drive the market higher as investors increased their exposure to select stocks.
Broader market indices also advanced, although their gains were smaller than those recorded by the benchmark indices.
The Nifty Midcap 100 rose 1.06%, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 gained 0.31%, indicating that the rally extended beyond large-cap stocks but remained concentrated in some of the market’s biggest companies.
Consumer goods stocks led the sectoral gains, with the Nifty FMCG index climbing nearly 3% during the session.
The increase reflected investor optimism about corporate earnings and consumer demand, particularly among companies producing food, beverages and other everyday household products.
However, not all sectors participated in the rally. The Nifty PSU Bank index was the weakest-performing sector, closing lower despite the strong gains in the broader market.
Analysts attributed the positive market sentiment to improving corporate financial results, relatively stable domestic economic conditions and changing global investment flows.
The shift in investor attention away from technology and AI-related stocks also appeared to benefit traditional sectors, including consumer goods.
Meanwhile, the Indian rupee strengthened approximately 0.15% to 94.74 against the U.S. dollar, supported by easing commodity prices that helped reduce concerns about India’s import costs.
Lower commodity prices can provide relief to the Indian economy by reducing the cost of imported goods and energy, potentially easing pressure on the country’s trade balance.
Analysts said the rupee’s near-term direction would depend on movements in global commodity prices, the strength of the U.S. dollar and foreign investment flows.
“Going ahead, the rupee’s outlook will depend on commodity price movements, global dollar trends and foreign fund flows, with expectations of improved capital inflows providing some support to the currency,” analysts noted.
Tuesday’s gains extended the Indian equity market’s winning streak to four sessions, with investors continuing to respond positively to domestic earnings developments despite uncertainty in global financial markets. (Source: IANS)
