New Delhi — The Indian government is expected to hold further discussions with Meta in the coming days as regulatory scrutiny of the company’s recommendation algorithms and content moderation systems intensifies.
The next round of talks will focus on how Meta’s algorithms recommend content to users and whether its moderation practices comply with Indian laws, according to government sources cited by NDTV Profit.
Officials are expected to examine the company’s handling of harmful material, including deepfakes and child sexual abuse content, as part of a broader effort to strengthen oversight of major social media platforms.
Meta’s global team will continue working with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to provide details about the technical operation of its recommendation and moderation systems, the sources said.
Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw was also expected to meet Meta representatives later Thursday.
The discussions are part of the government’s effort to ensure that social media companies introduce stronger safeguards against platform misuse while complying with India’s regulatory requirements.
The planned talks follow Meta’s apology over the temporary restriction of a Facebook post by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Joel Kaplan, Meta’s Chief Global Affairs Officer, said he apologized directly to Vaishnaw on behalf of the company for what he described as an error.
“I apologised to the minister on behalf of Meta for the error restricting PM Modi’s post,” Kaplan said in a statement shared with NDTV on Wednesday.
Kaplan was part of a senior Meta delegation that met Vaishnaw on Wednesday. During the meeting, the company acknowledged problems in the operation of its platforms.
The delegation also held separate discussions with Information Technology Secretary S. Krishnan before meeting the minister. (Source: IANS)
