New Delhi — Electric vehicle retail sales in India reached a record 327,901 units in July, surging more than 66% from a year earlier as adoption accelerated across major vehicle categories, according to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations.
The increase meant nearly one out of every eight vehicles sold at retail during the month was electric, reflecting growing acceptance of EVs among Indian consumers.
Electric two-wheelers led the growth, crossing the 200,000-unit mark for the first time. Sales jumped 88.3% year over year to 204,362 units, while the segment’s EV market share increased to 11.2% from 7.7% a year earlier.
TVS Motor led electric two-wheeler sales with 55,499 units, followed by Bajaj Auto with 45,613 and Ather Energy with 30,357. Ola Electric sold 14,106 units, down 23.5% from a year earlier.
Electric three-wheeler sales increased 25.3% to 87,055 units, with EVs accounting for 65.1% of the category. Mahindra Group led the segment with 14,191 units, followed by Bajaj Auto with 13,442.
Electric passenger vehicle sales climbed 83.1% year over year to 32,928 units, lifting their share of the passenger vehicle market to nearly 8% from about 5% a year earlier.
Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles remained the market leader with 13,678 electric vehicles sold, followed by Mahindra & Mahindra with 7,742 and JSW MG Motor India with 5,689.
Electric commercial vehicles recorded one of the strongest growth rates, with sales soaring nearly 181% to 3,556 units. Their market share more than doubled to 3.57% from 1.65% a year earlier. Tata Motors led the category with sales of 1,306 units.
FADA Vice President Sai Giridhar said the figures show that EV adoption has moved beyond projections and is becoming a significant part of the automobile market.
“Two-wheelers crossed the two-lakh mark for the first time, three-wheelers have made electric the default choice, commercial vehicles are witnessing fleet electrification, and passenger EV demand remains strong despite supply constraints,” Giridhar said.
FADA said the broad-based gains across vehicle categories point to an accelerating shift toward electric mobility.
Overall automobile retail sales reached 2.59 million units in July, up 25.89% from a year earlier, with every major vehicle category recording its best-ever July performance. (Source: IANS)
