New Delhi — Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal is expected to visit the United States toward the end of September for the G20 Trade Ministers’ Meeting, as India and the U.S. continue efforts to resolve outstanding issues in bilateral trade negotiations.
During the visit, Goyal is also likely to meet U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer on the sidelines of the G20 gathering, NDTV Profit reported.
The meeting could give the two sides an opportunity to review progress in negotiations and address remaining differences over a proposed bilateral trade agreement.
India and the U.S. have been negotiating a deal aimed at expanding market access, reducing trade barriers and strengthening economic ties. Discussions have covered tariffs, trade in goods and services and other market access issues.
India is seeking improved access to the U.S. market, particularly for sectors with strong export potential, while Washington has pushed for greater access for American goods and services in India.
A meeting between Goyal and Greer could help determine whether the two countries can narrow their differences and move closer to finalizing an agreement.
The G20 meeting will also give Goyal an opportunity to hold discussions with trade ministers from other major economies on issues affecting global commerce.
The expected September visit comes as New Delhi and Washington seek to advance negotiations and provide greater clarity on the scope and timing of a potential bilateral trade pact. (Source: IANS)
