NEW DELHI — Meta’s independent Oversight Board has criticized the social media giant over a series of election-related content moderation errors in the United States and Brazil, calling for greater transparency and stronger safeguards to protect legitimate political speech.

In a statement Tuesday, the Board raised concerns about recurring weaknesses in Meta’s election integrity measures, warning that improper enforcement decisions could restrict political participation and damage public confidence in elections.

The criticism follows moderation actions involving accounts associated with the “No Kings” political movement in the United States and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva during election periods.

According to the Board, Meta’s erroneous removal of a No Kings Instagram account should have been prevented by existing safeguards designed to identify and correct enforcement mistakes.

The Board also questioned why the affected accounts were not protected under Meta’s Cross-Check program, which provides additional human review for certain high-profile accounts, including civic and political organizations, before potentially consequential enforcement decisions are implemented.

Similar concerns emerged in Brazil, where Meta restricted advertising accounts associated with Lula during the country’s presidential election campaign.

The Board said those restrictions, imposed under the company’s fraud-related policies, should have been referred to specialized reviewers before enforcement action was taken.

The latest criticism builds on concerns the Oversight Board raised following Brazil’s 2022 presidential election, when it urged Meta to establish measurable standards for evaluating its election integrity efforts and publicly disclose relevant performance data.

Although Meta regularly publishes statistics on advertising archives, account removals and other enforcement activities, the Board said those figures do not adequately demonstrate whether the company’s moderation systems are effective or reveal where significant failures occur.

The Board warned that removing legitimate political content during election periods could discourage public participation and potentially undermine electoral integrity.

“Automated enforcement tools must take language, nuance, and political context into account to better protect political speech that does not incite violence,” the Oversight Board stated.

The criticism also raises questions about Meta’s ability to balance its efforts to prevent harmful content and election interference with its commitment to protecting freedom of expression.

In 2025, Meta pledged to reduce content moderation mistakes and allow greater freedom of expression, particularly in discussions involving politics and elections.

However, the Oversight Board said the recent incidents demonstrate that additional reforms are necessary to ensure enforcement decisions are accurate, consistent and transparent.

The Board urged Meta to strengthen its review procedures and provide more meaningful public information about the effectiveness of its election-related moderation policies. (Source: IANS)
