NEW DELHI — A power-related incident at Google Cloud’s London data center disrupted multiple online services Tuesday, affecting digital banking platforms and other applications across the United Kingdom.

Google confirmed that several cloud services were experiencing network disruptions in its Europe-west2 region, which is based in London. The outage began around 7 a.m. British Summer Time and was linked to a power incident affecting the Europe-west2-b zone.

In an update posted to its Cloud Status page, Google said the power issue had been mitigated and that partial recovery of infrastructure services was expected within 30 minutes, with remaining services to be restored afterward.

However, the company said its engineering teams were continuing to investigate the broader disruption and apologized to affected customers.

The incident coincided with widespread reports of problems accessing several online platforms, including British digital banking company Revolut.

Thousands of Revolut customers reported difficulties accessing services during the outage. The company acknowledged the disruptions and said it had been working to restore normal operations since identifying the problem earlier in the morning.

Revolut reassured customers that their money and personal data remained secure despite the technical issues and apologized for the inconvenience.

British banking company Halifax also reported problems affecting its mobile application and website.

Responding to a customer on social media platform X, Halifax said it was aware that some users were experiencing difficulties and that its teams were working to resolve the situation. The bank advised customers to contact its telephone support services if they needed assistance.

However, Halifax did not confirm whether its technical problems were directly connected to the Google Cloud outage.

UK-based budgeting application Emma also experienced service interruptions and attributed the disruption to the Google Cloud incident in London.

The company said the outage was caused by a technical infrastructure problem rather than a security breach and that it was monitoring developments while working toward restoring access to its application.

Meanwhile, outage-tracking website Downdetector recorded a sharp increase in user reports involving several websites and online services Tuesday morning.

It remained unclear whether all the reported disruptions were related to Google Cloud or whether some platforms were experiencing unrelated technical problems.

The incident highlighted the dependence of financial technology companies and other digital service providers on major cloud infrastructure platforms, where a localized infrastructure failure can affect multiple customer-facing applications.

Google said its engineers were continuing recovery efforts as affected services gradually returned to normal operations. (Source: IANS)
