New Delhi— Former U.S. President Donald Trump has announced plans to sign a sweeping executive order aimed at cutting prescription drug prices in the U.S. by 30% to 80%, a move he says will bring immediate relief to American consumers.
Posting on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump criticized the long-standing disparity between drug prices in the U.S. and other countries. “For many years, the world has wondered why prescription drugs in the United States were five to ten times more expensive than the same drugs made in the same labs abroad,” he wrote.
The proposed order would implement a “most favored nation” policy, tying U.S. drug prices to the lowest price paid by any other country for the same medication. Trump claimed the change would significantly reduce healthcare costs for Americans, calling it “a level of savings never even thought of before.”
He also accused pharmaceutical companies of price gouging, using research and development costs as justification. The policy is expected to dramatically lower the cost of cancer treatments and other injectable drugs.
Trump acknowledged that the move could lead to higher prices in other countries as part of a global price alignment. “They will rise throughout the world in order to equalize and, for the first time in many years, bring fairness to America,” he said.
A similar proposal from Trump during his first term was blocked in court. This time, he assured supporters the measure would take effect and “save trillions of dollars.” (Source: IANS)
