New Delhi— OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said Thursday that India has become the company’s second-largest market globally and “may become our largest” in the future.
Speaking on the WTF podcast with Indian entrepreneur Nikhil Kamath, Altman described GPT-5 as “having PhD-level experts in every field available to you 24/7 — not only to answer questions but also to do things for you: write code, conduct research, plan events.”
He explained that GPT-5 can support nearly every function of an early-stage business — from software development and customer support to marketing strategy, communications, and even reviewing legal documents.
Calling it the “best time to start a career,” Altman said AI tools like GPT-5 offer young Indians powerful advantages in multiple fields. He praised India’s enthusiasm for AI adoption, describing it as an “open canvas” for innovation. “If there is one large society in the world most enthusiastic about transforming with AI right now, it’s India. The excitement, the embrace of AI…the energy is incredible,” he said.
Altman noted that feedback from Indian users — particularly regarding language support, affordability, and accessibility — has directly shaped OpenAI’s product development. He also stressed that the real opportunity for India lies in moving beyond consumption to creating tools, platforms, and companies for global use.
According to Altman, GPT-5 marks a major leap in how people interact with AI, enabling not just answers but execution across personal, creative, and professional domains. GPT-5 is available to all users, with Plus subscribers receiving higher usage limits and Pro subscribers gaining access to GPT-5 Pro, which offers extended reasoning for even more comprehensive and accurate results.
