NEW DELHI — A startup founder and angel investor, Udit Goenka, sparked an online debate after claiming he was served non-vegetarian biryani instead of the vegetarian meal he ordered from Behrouz Biryani through food delivery platform Swiggy.
Taking to social media platform X, Goenka said, “Ordered Veg Biryani from Behrouz and I was delivered non-veg,” tagging Swiggy in the post and demanding swift action. “Resolve this before I go to consumer court,” he warned, also tagging Behrouz Biryani and adding, “Suing you guys for this.”
Behrouz Biryani responded with a public apology on X, writing, “Hi Udit! That is certainly not the experience we intend for our customers, and we apologise as your experience has been hampered. Kindly DM us your Order ID and contact number so that we can fix this for you.” Swiggy, however, had not immediately responded to the post.
The incident quickly drew widespread attention online, with some users advising Goenka not to order vegetarian food from non-vegetarian restaurants.
This is not the first time Swiggy and Behrouz Biryani have faced such complaints. In April, a woman criticized Swiggy on Instagram after receiving non-vegetarian food during Navratri. Similarly, in July, a UPSC teacher shared a video on X showing a bowl of non-vegetarian soup allegedly delivered via Zomato despite ordering vegetarian.
Consumer courts have also previously fined the companies for similar mix-ups. Last year, the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commissions in Telangana and Punjab imposed penalties—Rs 10,000 on Swiggy and a Madhapur-based restaurant in one case, and Rs 50,000 on Swiggy and Behrouz Biryani in another—for delivering non-vegetarian food to vegetarian customers.
Meanwhile, Swiggy recently reported a consolidated net loss of Rs 1,092 crore for the quarter ended September (Q2 FY26), widening from Rs 626 crore in the same quarter last fiscal year, according to the company’s stock exchange filing. (Source: IANS)
