New Delhi — India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has asked senior Meta officials to explain the temporary restriction placed on a Facebook post by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The meeting is expected to take place within the next seven to 10 days.
MeitY Secretary S. Krishnan said the government is seeking both technical and policy-level explanations for the incident.
“India intends to convey its concerns directly to Meta and obtain a comprehensive account of the circumstances that led to the brief restriction,” Krishnan said.
Meta has already expressed regret and provided the government with a preliminary explanation. However, the ministry is seeking additional details, including the steps the company is taking to prevent similar incidents.
“Meta has already conveyed its regret over the incident and provided a preliminary explanation to the government. However, the Centre has sought a more detailed clarification, including the measures the company is putting in place to ensure such incidents do not recur,” Krishnan said.
The government summoned a senior Meta executive after Modi’s post was temporarily restricted. The post addressed young people in India and reiterated the government’s commitment to taking strict action against examination paper leaks.
Meta attributed the restriction to a technical glitch and apologized, but the government said the company’s initial explanation was insufficient.
In the July 23 video, Modi sought to reassure students that his administration was taking firm action over leaks involving the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test.
Krishnan said Meta informed the government that it introduced a new protocol on July 28 to reduce the risk of similar incidents.
The updated process includes additional oversight of content published by the prime minister and other high-profile accounts to guard against unintended restrictions. (Source: IANS)
