New Delhi — Anthropic said Monday that its artificial intelligence assistant Claude will soon support in-country inference in India through Amazon Bedrock, allowing requests submitted through the India endpoint to be processed on servers located within the country.
The capability, expected to become available in the coming weeks, is designed to help organizations in regulated industries keep sensitive data within India and move artificial intelligence projects from testing to full-scale deployment.
“For banks, insurers, and public and government agencies, that control is the difference between evaluating AI and deploying it,” Anthropic said in a blog post, adding that local access to Claude has been a major request from organizations in India.
Amazon Bedrock is Amazon Web Services’ platform for building and deploying generative AI applications and agents at scale.
“India is at an inflection point in its AI journey, and institutions from banks to government agencies are ready to harness frontier AI at scale,” said Sandeep Dutta, President of AWS India and South Asia.
Dutta said in-country inference will allow institutions to deploy advanced AI models on the same infrastructure they already use for critical workloads, opening new opportunities in citizen services and digital transformation.
Claude deployments through Amazon Bedrock also include audit trails and access controls intended to meet the requirements of risk and compliance teams before systems are moved into production.
“Bringing Claude inference to India is a turning point for enterprise AI in this country,” said Irina Ghose, Managing Director of India at Anthropic.
“India’s banks, insurers, telecoms, public and government agencies steward the data of a billion people. When that data can stay in India, AI moves from pilots into the systems that matter most,” Ghose said.
She added that in-country inference is part of Anthropic’s broader expansion plans in India, which include growing its local team, improving Claude’s performance in Indian languages and developing partnerships to apply the technology across the country.
“Many of the partnerships with the greatest public-impact potential, with state governments, public health programs, and agencies that serve citizens directly, involve exactly the kind of personal data that cannot leave the country,” the company said. (Source: IANS)
