New Delhi — Elon Musk said social media platform X will make government requests to remove or restrict content more visible to users as part of a broader effort to increase transparency around content moderation and official intervention in online speech.
“Any censorship required by governments is now clearly visible,” Musk wrote in a post on X.
Under the planned changes, users will be able to see when governments request the removal of posts or restrictions on accounts. X also plans to disclose information about the agencies making the requests and, when available, the legal basis or justification cited for the action.
The move is part of Musk’s wider effort to make the platform’s moderation and content-distribution systems more transparent. Since acquiring Twitter and rebranding it as X, Musk has repeatedly argued that users should have greater visibility into how content is moderated and ranked.
According to a Crypto Briefing report, X has complied with between 83% and 98.8% of government takedown requests during Musk’s ownership, depending on the reporting period. The report said those compliance rates were higher than under the platform’s previous management.
X has also sought to increase transparency around its recommendation systems by making portions of its technology open source, allowing researchers and users to examine how content-ranking mechanisms work.
The platform has said it wants users to have clearer information about factors affecting the visibility of posts, including whether content is being amplified, reduced in reach or otherwise restricted. (Source: IANS)
