NEW DELHI — Google is exploring new investments in India focused on artificial intelligence infrastructure and the local manufacturing of servers and drones, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said Friday.

Vaishnaw shared details of a meeting with Google executives in a post on X, saying the Alphabet-owned company is evaluating opportunities across AI infrastructure and electronics manufacturing in India.

“Google is exploring investments in India across AI infrastructure and the manufacturing of servers and drones,” Vaishnaw said.

The comments come as major technology companies increase spending on AI capabilities, cloud computing and data center expansion.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai recently said the company would raise its total capital expenditure to $185 billion this year, largely because of aggressive investment in AI infrastructure. Speaking at the Google Cloud Next 2026 summit last month, Pichai said more than half of Google’s machine learning computing resources would be allocated to its cloud business.

Google has already announced a $15 billion investment plan in Andhra Pradesh to build a “gigawatt-scale AI ecosystem” in Visakhapatnam.

As part of that effort, the company began work in April on its India AI Hub project in partnership with AdaniConneX and Nxtra by Airtel. Google has described the project as its largest investment in India’s digital future to date.

The initiative includes India’s first gigawatt-scale AI hub across three data center campuses and a 1 GW hyperscale AI data center.

The Andhra Pradesh government has allocated nearly 600 acres in Turluvada, Rambilli and Adavivaram for the AI infrastructure project.

At the project’s groundbreaking ceremony on April 28, Vaishnaw said India is positioned to become a trusted global partner in electronics manufacturing and supply chains, supported by policy initiatives and growing technology capabilities.

The minister also urged global technology companies, including Google, to increase local production of servers, graphics processing units and semiconductor chips in India as part of the government’s broader push to strengthen domestic electronics manufacturing. (Source: IANS)
