Mumbai — Tata Trusts has begun the process of selecting the next chairman of Tata Sons after N. Chandrasekaran decided not to seek another term when his current tenure ends in February 2027.
The Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, a principal shareholder in Tata Sons through Tata Trusts, said Thursday that its trustees approved the formation of a Selection Committee to recommend Chandrasekaran’s successor in accordance with Tata Sons’ Articles of Association.
The trust said the selection process would begin as soon as possible to ensure an orderly leadership transition at the holding company of the Tata Group.
In a statement, the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust said it respected Chandrasekaran’s decision and expressed appreciation for his leadership of the group. It said it would support Tata Sons in ensuring a “smooth, timely and orderly transition of leadership” consistent with the group’s long-term interests and values.
The move comes a day after Chandrasekaran informed the Tata Sons board that he would not seek reappointment, resolving months of uncertainty over the conglomerate’s leadership succession.
Chandrasekaran, who has spent about four decades with the Tata Group, said Wednesday that he would step down at the end of his current term despite receiving support from the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and Sir Ratan Tata Trust for another five-year term.
According to Chandrasekaran, both trusts had unanimously recommended extending his tenure. The proposal was subsequently backed by the Tata Sons Nomination and Remuneration Committee and the company’s board.
However, a proposal placed before the Tata Sons board on Feb. 24, 2026, failed to receive unanimous support after one director declined to back it.
Chandrasekaran said Tata Sons is pursuing several major strategic initiatives and that stakeholders needed clarity about the company’s leadership beyond February 2027.
He became chairman of Tata Sons in January 2017 after serving as Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Tata Consultancy Services. Chandrasekaran began his Tata career as an intern at TCS in 1987 and rose through the company before taking charge of the Tata Group. (Source: IANS)
