NEW DELHI — Microsoft said on Tuesday that it will invest $17.5 billion in India over the next four years, marking the tech company’s largest-ever investment in Asia. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the country’s youth “will harness this opportunity to innovate and leverage the power of AI for a better planet.”

“Today we are announcing our largest investment in Asia — $17.5 billion over four years (CY 2026 to 2029) — to advance India’s cloud and artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, skilling and ongoing operations,” Microsoft said in a statement. The initiative builds on the $3 billion investment announced earlier this year, which the company expects to complete by the end of 2026.

The announcement followed a meeting in New Delhi between Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella and Prime Minister Modi. Nadella called the discussion an “inspiring conversation” on India’s expanding AI opportunities.

“To support the country’s ambitions, Microsoft is committing US$17.5B—our largest investment ever in Asia—to help build the infrastructure, skills, and sovereign capabilities needed for India’s AI-first future,” Nadella posted on X.

Responding to Nadella’s post, PM Modi wrote, “When it comes to AI, the world is optimistic about India!” He added that Microsoft’s investment reflects growing global confidence in India’s capabilities and said the nation’s youth will use the opportunity “to innovate and leverage the power of AI for a better planet.”

Microsoft said India is at a pivotal stage in its AI journey, emerging as a “frontier AI nation” ready to use technology as a driver of inclusive growth and economic transformation. Nadella is currently in India on an AI-focused tour.

During the meeting, PM Modi and Nadella discussed India’s AI roadmap and long-term priorities. The investment centers on three pillars — scale, skills and sovereignty — aligning with the government’s vision to build a comprehensive national AI ecosystem.

Microsoft said the funding will expand its cloud and AI infrastructure, strengthen skilling initiatives and support operations across its India workforce of more than 22,000 employees located in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Gurugram, Noida and other cities. These teams contribute to global innovation across Microsoft’s AI stack, including Copilot Studio, Azure AI Search, AI agents, AI speech and translation, and Azure Machine Learning.

A major component of the investment is the build-out of secure, sovereign-ready hyperscale cloud infrastructure. The India South Central cloud region in Hyderabad — expected to go live in mid-2026 — will be Microsoft’s largest in the country, consisting of three availability zones and covering an area roughly equivalent to two Eden Gardens stadiums.

Microsoft will also expand its existing data center regions in Chennai, Hyderabad and Pune, offering improved resilience, low-latency performance and increased capacity for mission-critical workloads across enterprises, startups and public sector institutions.

Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw said the investment underscores India’s emergence as a trusted global technology partner. “This partnership will set new benchmarks and drive the country’s leap from digital public infrastructure to AI public infrastructure,” he said.

Microsoft India and South Asia President Puneet Chandok said the company’s new commitment, combined with the previous $3 billion investment, is aimed at translating India’s AI ambitions into nationwide impact. He said the emphasis will remain on hyperscale infrastructure, sovereign-ready solutions and skilling programs that “empower every Indian to not just join the future but shape it.” (Source: IANS)
