NEW DELHI — Nearly 60 percent of Indian businesses that are confident in scaling artificial intelligence responsibly have mature responsible AI frameworks in place, although gaps remain around data access and regulatory clarity, according to a new industry report released Thursday.

The report by the National Association of Software and Service Companies said 30 percent of surveyed organizations have already established mature responsible AI practices, while another 45 percent are actively implementing formal frameworks. This marks a significant improvement from 2023, indicating growing awareness and adoption of responsible AI principles across the ecosystem.

The findings are based on a survey of 574 senior executives from large enterprises, small and medium-sized businesses, and startups involved in the commercial development and use of AI in India.

According to the report, there is a strong correlation between AI capability and responsible practices. Large enterprises lead in maturity, with 46 percent reporting advanced frameworks, while SMEs and startups are also making progress, registering maturity levels of 20 percent and 16 percent, respectively.

From an industry perspective, the banking, financial services and insurance sector leads with 35 percent maturity, followed by technology, media and telecommunications at 31 percent and healthcare at 18 percent. Nearly half of businesses across these sectors are actively advancing their responsible AI frameworks.

Workforce enablement has emerged as a central priority, with nearly nine out of ten organizations investing in awareness programs and training, the report said. Business leaders expressed the highest confidence in meeting data protection obligations, reflecting relatively mature privacy practices, even as monitoring-related compliance continues to be a key area of concern.

“As AI becomes deeply embedded in critical decisions across finance, healthcare, and public services, responsible AI is no longer optional; it is foundational to building trust, ensuring accountability, and sustaining innovation,” said Sangeeta Gupta, Senior Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer at Nasscom.

She added that India’s AI leadership will ultimately be judged not only by the scale of adoption, but by how responsibly and inclusively AI systems are designed and deployed.

The report noted that while confidence in data protection remains high, further strengthening is needed in monitoring and compliance mechanisms as AI adoption continues to expand across sectors. (Source: IANS)
