NEW DELHI — Maruti Suzuki India reported record monthly sales of 242,688 vehicles in May, surpassing the previous high set in April, the country’s largest carmaker said Monday.

Total sales rose 34.8% from 180,077 units in May 2025.

The company said domestic sales totaled 193,535 units in May, up about 39% from 138,690 units a year earlier. Exports reached 41,914 units, while shipments to other original equipment manufacturers stood at 7,239 units.

Passenger vehicles, including hatchbacks, sedans, vans and utility vehicles, drove the growth, with sales rising to 190,337 units from 135,962 units a year ago.

Utility vehicles, including the Brezza, Fronx, Jimny, Grand Vitara, Victoris, Ertiga, XL6 and Invicto, grew 44.4% to 79,267 units from 54,899 units in the year-earlier period. Sales of the Alto and S-Presso more than doubled to 16,275 units.

Exports increased to 41,914 units from 31,219 units in May 2025, while sales of the company’s commercial vehicle model rose to 3,198 units from 2,728 units.

The May performance followed strong sales in April, when Maruti Suzuki sold 239,646 vehicles, up 33.29% from 179,791 units a year earlier. Domestic sales in April reached a record 191,122 units, surpassing the previous peak of 182,165 units recorded in December 2025.

The automaker has said it plans to increase the share of rail-based dispatches to 35% by fiscal 2030-31. It also plans to establish an in-plant railway siding at its upcoming Kharkhoda facility, a move the company said would help reduce carbon emissions, fuel consumption and road congestion.

Maruti Suzuki also announced in May that it would raise prices by up to 30,000 rupees across models beginning in June 2026, citing sustained increases in raw material and operating costs across the auto industry. (Source: IANS)
